Chapter Twenty Seven
Roderick did not expect much from the rumour of faeries. What he had heard so far did little to inspire optimism, primarily because the only story he had heard so far was that a family cursed to become bears had not been returned to human form. However, he knew from Philipâs tales of adventure that if a lead were to drop into oneâs lap, it should be followed.
The journey itself was surprisingly pleasant. Roderick had not realised how much he missed the company of a person with opposable thumbs. Goldilocks had maintained her friendly attitude, and he had the sense she was as glad as he was (if not more so) to have someone to travel with. She did, unfortunately, have a rather unhealthy obsession with what animalsâincluding Philipâhad to say. Roderick, wisely, chose not to answer her many questions.
As they approached their destination, Goldilocks broached the subject of the faeries, although not in the way Roderick had been expecting. Instead, she began to warn him about the quirks of the camp.
âThey search everyone coming in, and they are not happy if you try to sneak in past the guards,â she told him. âBest to just accept that they will rifle through your belongings. They will not take anything, I do not think. They just want to make sure you are not hiding anything dangerous.â
âWhat sort of dangerous things?â he asked. He thought of Philipâs sword, packed in with the saddlebags, mostly forgotten.
Goldilocks, who had had the opportunity to search through those bags herself, guessed what worried him. âThey might confiscate your weapons, but mostly they are looking for anything magical.â She glanced at him, a wry smile tugging at her lips. âI do not suppose you have any magical scrolls or enchanted objects hidden anywhere? No? Then it should not be a problem.â
âWhy the focus on magical objects?â He was vaguely aware that there were tensions between different magic usersâor at least there was between witches. They were territorial, with large distances between each lone witch.
âFaery blood, faery skinâwell, faery everything is magically potent. Apparently they used to be hunted as ingredients for spells.â
âAh.â He cleared his throat. âI see.â
âThe faeries themselves are a bit odd,â she continued. âI have not spoken to them directlyânot looking for wishes, myselfâbut I have heard they are obsessed with honesty. They can be very rude if they decide you are not being truthful.â
-They must not like Goldilocks very much,- Philip mused.
Goldilocks noticed the âribbitâ. âWhat did he say?â she asked.
âNothing,â Roderick replied.
âReally, Roderick. If you do not tell anyone what he says, then he does not have a voice at all. It is not nice,â she chided.
-I am beginning to like her,- Philip said, his amusement audible in the translation.
âFine,â Roderick said. âHe thinks the faeries must not like you, since you are a thief and a liar.â
Goldilocks smiled. âOf course they would not. That is why I steer clear of them. There is no need to take it personally. They are a bunch of snobs, sure, but that does not mean they will not help you.
